WHO IS SERVED BY THE FOUNDATION?

Pathways to Independence supports students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities with the support of a trained group of peer mentors. The program celebrates those highly motivated individuals who strive for more than is expected.

PATHWAYS TO INDEPENDENCE STUDENTS:

  • Have a cognitive or developmental disability that interferes with their academic performance
  • Would be likely to have considerable difficulty completing a traditional university degree
  • Have completed a modified high school program
  • Often attain scores well below average on standardized testing
  • Have sufficient emotional and independent living skills necessary to participate in coursework and campus life
  • Typically have reading and writing skills ranging from the 4th-7th grade levels
  • Must be independent in handling special dietary and/or medical needs
  • Demonstrate the ability to accept responsibility for their actions and maintain respect for themselves and others
  • Demonstrate the ability to accept responsibility for their actions and maintain respect for themselves and others
  • Must not have a history of disruptive or challenging behaviors
  • Display a desire to continue an academic career
  • Must be able to remain unsupervised for a minimum of 3 hours
  • Are over the age of 18 by August 31st of the year they are to commence the proposed program
  • If selected for an interview, applicants must participate in an interview with and without the presence of family/support person. Additionally, applicants accepted into the proposed program must be available to attend a summer orientation.
